MEDEL GALLERY SHU will hold a solo exhibition of Jonathan Hadipranata from May 17 to May 29.

By depicting moments where, one looks almost as if they do not belong, are neglected, or coalesce among other individuals in an environment. I am questioning the existence of oneself in a situation and society.

“What roles are we supposed to play at any given moment?”
“How big is our contribution in these instances?”
“Are we just there for the sake of being present?”
“Who gets to decide the scale of our influence?”

I believe we are all subject to be criticized by the people in our surroundings whether we want to or not, maybe even deny it. Nonetheless, our existence is affected by the value put forth unto us, interpreted as though we are a work of art currently put on view.

In May 2021, he expanded his market from Indonesia and has made a strong debut with his first solo exhibition in Tokyo. Since then, he has exhibited his works at galleries all around the world and continues to be well-loved by many collectors

Jonathan Hadipranata is scheduled to be in the gallery, and personally will be looking forward to seeing everyone.

MEDEL GALLERY SHUでは5月17日より5月29日までJonathan Hadipranata（ジョナサンハディプラナタ）の個展を開催します。

個人のあり方のみならず、人と社会との交流の中において、自分自身の存在や役割を常に模索しているジョナサン。作品を描くことでその苦悩や振る舞い、そして解決への道筋を私たちに示しているとも言えます。

本展ではタイトルの”Among The Crowd”の通り、群衆を描く作品が初めて登場しました。一名または数名の描写が多かったこれまでの作品との違いもお楽しみください。

ある環境の中で、まるで自分の居場所がないかのように見えたり、疎まれたり、他の人々と交わる瞬間を描くことで、状況や社会の中での自分の存在を問う、状況や社会の中での自分の存在を問うているのです。

“私たちは今、どんな役割を担っているのだろう？”

“このような場合、私たちはどの程度貢献しているのか？“

“私たちはただそこに存在しているだけなのか？“

“私たちの影響力の大きさを決めるのは誰なのか？“

私たちは、望むと望まざるとにかかわらず、また、もしかしたら否定するとしても、周囲の人々から批判される対象になっていると思うのです。しかし、私たちの存在は、あたかも芸術作品のように解釈され、その価値によって影響を受けます。

昨年の5月、故郷のインドネシアを離れて、彼自身初めての個展を東京で行い、鮮烈なデビューを飾りました。

それ以降は世界中のギャラリーで展示を重ね愛され続けています。

今回は本人も来日予定。

ジョナサン・ハディプラナタは、個人としての自分と社会や外界との関係を含めた自分自身の経験にフォーカスした作品を描く。
傷つき、抑圧されたように佇んでいる少女たちを描くことの背景は、彼本人の言葉を借りるならば「自分自身について話すことの怖さ、それをどう思われるかを気にしてしまうこと。そしてそのうちに隠された感情を探ること」という、他者との関係性における自己言及的な深い洞察があり、彼の描く少年少女の姿に一種の象徴的な性格を読み取ることができる。

“The concept of my painting in itself arises from my own view of society. We are often unable to say what we wanted to say or express our true individuality, be it for the worse or for the better.I believe each one of us has had the experience to sacrifice a part of our individuality to fit in a society. Symbolized through a taped mouth, I wanted to in a way capture those moments. The communication cup is also another symbol used in these works to play off the irony.

Through my works, I’d like to invite the audience in a positive way, to recall a moment, a time, or a part of our life where we had to hold ourselves back or chose not to say anything in fear of criticism, Would things be different if we had chosen to speak our minds?”
