Igniting the Earth
MEDEL GALLERY SHU HIBIYA presents a solo exhibition by Ryusuke Asai, titled “Igniting the Earth | 地球を織す,” on view from May 8 to May 26, 2026.
Based in Tokyo, Ryusuke Asai has established a distinguished career as a ceramic artist. This exhibition marks a significant milestone, presenting his work in a contemporary art context and highlighting a new phase in his practice. Centered on newly developed three-dimensional sculptures and objects, the exhibition reflects a bold expansion of his artistic language.
Alongside these recent works, the exhibition will also feature Asai’s signature functional vessels, offering insight into the foundation of his craftsmanship and the evolution of his approach to form and material.
A key highlight of the exhibition is a special collaboration with the ikebana artist SAIGA. Featuring floral arrangements composed specifically for Asai’s vessels, the presentation creates a dynamic dialogue between ceramic form and the ephemeral nature of living plants.
Igniting the Earth
The earth has accumulated time,
undergoing continuous processes of formation and transformation.
To ignite the earth is to reveal its latent forces,
to awaken the energy that lies dormant within the soil.
The act of firing, too, is a practice that gives form to an earth in perpetual transformation.
Thus ignited, the earth emerges
as sculpture, as vessel,
as traces inscribed by time and heat.
This exhibition marks the debut of contemporary artist Ryusuke Asai.
Having long cultivated his practice within the field of ceramics,
Asai’s work now comes into presence
within a space of free and open creation.
Through this exhibition, viewers are invited to experience the intersection of tradition and contemporary expression, as well as the evolving relationship between material, form, and time.
