MOUNTAIN ORANGE KEEP
May 29 – June 16, 2026
12:00pm-7:00pm
Closed: Wednesday & Thursday
Exhibition Final closes at 5:00PM
Peter Opheim: A Contemporary Portraitist Imbuing Canvases with the Soul of Clay
Based in New York, Peter Opheim is an artist who has garnered significant attention in the contemporary art scene for his remarkably original methodology. His most distinctive hallmark lies in his creative process: before a single stroke of paint touches the canvas, he first hand-sculpts vibrant clay maquettes.
The subjects appearing on his canvases are “hybrid creatures”—imaginary beings that are at once grotesque and endearingly whimsical. Using these self-created sculptures as his “models,” Opheim applies rich layers of oil paint to breathe life and an overwhelming sense of presence into his work. While the imagery may initially evoke a sense of innocent charm, it artfully conceals the complexities of human internal conflict and the precariousness of existence, resonating deeply with the viewer’s subconscious.
His profound artistic philosophy has earned high international acclaim. In 1995, he was awarded a prestigious grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, a hallmark of excellence for any contemporary artist. Currently represented by the cutting-edge New York gallery The Hole, Opheim has held solo exhibitions at leading galleries in London, Paris, and Taipei. His work is held in numerous public collections, including the Harwood Museum of Art in New Mexico.
With a steadily growing presence in major Japanese galleries and institutions, Opheim stands as one of the most compelling artists for collectors seeking the masterpieces of the next generation.

MOUNTAIN ORANGE KEEP
The chance encounter— the person I haven’t met yet.
The mountain, both real and imagined.
An idea forming in the mind.
Orange.
The places I will go someday, and the possibility of lying next to you.
Keeping curiosity.
MEDEL GALLERY SHU is pleased to present “MOUNTAIN ORANGE KEEP,” a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Peter Opheim, on view from May 29 through June 16.
Peter Opheim is an artist widely recognized in the contemporary art scene for his highly original creative process.
One of the defining characteristics of his practice is the way he begins each painting: before applying paint to canvas, he first hand-sculpts vividly colored clay maquettes. The figures depicted in his paintings are strange yet charming hybrid creatures that exist entirely within his imagination. Using these sculptural forms as “models,” Opheim builds rich layers of oil paint that imbue the canvas with a remarkable sense of presence and vitality. While the works initially appear playful and innocent, beneath their surface lies a nuanced exploration of human psychology, inner conflict, and the fragility of existence, quietly engaging the viewer on a subconscious level.
His distinctive artistic vision has received international acclaim. In 1995, Opheim was awarded a grant from the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation. He is currently represented by the influential New York gallery The Hole and has held solo exhibitions at prominent galleries in London, Paris, Taipei, and other major cities worldwide. His works are included in numerous public collections, including the Harwood Museum of Art in New Mexico.
In Japan as well, Opheim has steadily expanded his presence through exhibitions at galleries and major department stores across the country, attracting growing attention from collectors seeking significant contemporary artists of the next generation.
We invite you to experience the world of Peter Opheim, a contemporary portraitist who breathes the soul of clay into painting.
MOUNTAIN ORANGE KEEP (Mountain, Orange, Curiosity)
A chance encounter —
The person I have not yet met.
The mountain, both real and imagined.
An idea taking shape within the mind.
Orange.
A place I may someday visit.
And the possibility lying beside you.
To continue holding onto curiosity.
