MEDEL GALLERY SHU is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Honami Konishi, titled “Ephemeral Portrait,” on view from April 17 to May 5, 2026.

Konishi is an emerging sculptor who completed a Master’s degree in Sculpture at Musashino Art University in 2023. In this exhibition, Konishi attempts to extract the “gravity” of a specific moment from the continuous flow of time and transcribe it into material form.

The chisel marks carved into Konishi’s works do not merely define physical form. Rather, they record the “spillage” of visual information that occurs when the artist confronts a subject, as well as the afterimages that settle deep within consciousness. While traditional wood sculpture often aspires toward permanence, Konishi’s works instead embody the constant cycle of collapse and regeneration inherent in the fleeting “here and now.”

A notable aspect of the work is the coexistence of organic wood and inorganic structural elements symbolized by steel pipes. This contrast sharply delineates the boundary between the social systems that underpin our lives and the fundamental vitality that pulses within them. As scattered particles of light—fragments of experience—are gathered and condensed into a single mass through the artist’s hands, what emerges is neither “past” nor “future,” but a newly carved “present” as an independent horizon.

While tracing fleeting things out of the corner of the eye, there are moments when I find myself holding my breath.
Even as we share the same timeline, the world seems to move just slightly ahead.
The wings I once chased in childhood brought with them a brief shimmer of light.

When points eventually form a line, those scattered glimmers become a single trajectory, quietly connecting to this place.

Through this exhibition, we hope visitors will encounter fragments of the “contours of the world” as captured by Honami Konishi, and experience a resonance with the flow of time within themselves.
