MEDEL GALLERY SHUでは、1月17日より29日までオランダ人アーティスト、テオヤンセンによって創造された「ストランドビースト」の制作過程が覗けるスケッチ展「-Fossielen en Schetsen – Kinetiek Esthetiek」を開催します。
テオ・ヤンセン。オランダ人アーティストであり、物理学の経験を駆使して独自のアートを生み出してきた彼の作品「ストランドビースト」シリーズは、生命の進化と自然の力を表現するユニークなものです。彼のアートは、生命の摂理を再創造し、その進化の過程を追い求めるテーマに基づいています。
1980年代後半、コンピューター上で生き物の動きをプログラムした「Lineamentum」を発表したことから始まるテオ・ヤンセンの探求。1990年からは、風を動力源に、砂浜を歩行する架空の生物「ストランドビースト」の制作に取り組み始めました。オランダ語で「砂浜の生命体」を意味するこのビーストたちは、現在の形に至るまで、試行錯誤と進化を繰り返してきました。
現在では世界中の美術館で展示の機会を得てきました。
本展では、「ストランドビースト」のスケッチを通じて、テオ・ヤンセンがどのようにして独自の架空動物を生みだす創造的な過程を覗き見ることができます。
生命の進化を見つめていたい
テオ・ヤンセンのビーストたちが歩く姿には、まるで生まれたての生き物が歩くようなぎこちなさに不思議な愛らしさを感じてしまいます。
これらの動きは、自然界の動物を模倣したというよりは、風を動力源とし、砂浜をまっすぐに歩行する機能を生み出すために、遺伝的アルゴリズムを活用し、三角形の足を開発したことによるのだと言います。
テオはビーストを開発する過程で、風を動力とすることや、強風から守るために群れを成すなど自然界の力学を利用してきました。試行錯誤の中で自然のダイナミズムを注意深く見つめるまなざしが現れており、生命が進化する過程に対する彼の探究が現れています。
素材との対話とキネティックエネルギー
テオ・ヤンセンは「ストランドビースト」の制作において、素材をどこにでもあるプラスティックチューブに限定することを自分に課したそうです。
素材を限定することによって素材と向き合い、長い時間をかけてその可能性を最大限に引き出すことができたと語っています。
オープンソースによる繁殖
現在、テオ・ヤンセンのビーストたちの構造はオープンソースとして公開され、世界中で新たなビーストが誕生しています。
身近な素材で作れることによっても継続的な繁殖の可能性が開かれています。
誰もがビーストの進化に参加できる時代が訪れています。
自然と人間のつながりを再確認する
風を動力とし、素材と対話しながら創造されたビーストたち。海面上昇を回避するために砂を集めるビーストを作るのが、発想のきっかけであったとも言われています
彼らの歩行する姿は、生命そのもののかよわさや尊さ想起させ、自然の力を再認識すると同時に、人間が自然界にもたらす影響とこれからの進化においての我々の行動についての思考をうながします。
本展は、テオ・ヤンセンの独創的なストランドビースト誕生の秘密を感じられるスケッチと、ビーストのフォッシル（化石）と呼ばれるストランドビーストのパーツの標本を展示販売します。
Theo Jansen is engaged in creating new forms of life: the so called strandbeests. Skeletons made from yellow plastic tube (Dutch electricity pipe) are able to walk and get their energy from the wind. They have evolved since their inception in 1990 and have been divided into 12 periods of evolution.

テオ・ヤンセンは、いわゆるストランドビーストと呼ばれる新しい生命体の創造に取り組んでいる。黄色いプラスチックチューブ（オランダの電気パイプ）で作られた骨格は歩くことができ、風からエネルギーを得ている。彼らは1990年の誕生以来進化を続け、12の進化の時期に分けられている。その特性によってこの時期が決まる。

At MEDEL GALLERY SHU, from January 17 to 29, we will hold a sketch exhibition showcasing the creative process behind the “Strandbeest,” invented by the Dutch artist Theo Jansen.
Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist who has created unique art by leveraging his experience in physics. His Strandbeest series is a remarkable representation of life’s evolution and the forces of nature. His art is based on the theme of recreating the laws of life and pursuing its evolutionary process.
Theo Jansen’s exploration began in the late 1980s when he presented “Lineamentum”, a program simulating the movement of creatures on computers. From 1990, he began working on the creation of Strandbeest, fictional creatures powered by wind that walk along sandy beaches. Meaning “beach creatures” in Dutch, these Beests have evolved through repeated experimentation and iterations to their current forms.
Today, they have been exhibited in art museums around the world.
This exhibition offers a glimpse into Theo Jansen’s creative process of bringing his unique imaginary creatures to life through the sketches of Strandbeest.

オランダのアーティスト、テオ・ヤンセン（1948‒）は母国の海面上昇問題を解決するひとつのアイデアとして「ストランドビースト（Strandbeest）」という名の生命体の製作を始めました。それは風を動力として砂浜（strand）で生息する生命体（beest）。彼らは海岸の砂を持ち上げ、自然と共生しながら海岸線を守ります。環境問題への警鐘として、近年SDGsで何かと話題になる30年以上前から続く制作活動です。
初期の作品は廃材などのプラスチックチューブを再利用して作られました。物理工学に基づいて考え出された動きは、あたかも生きているかのように滑らかです。人間がいなくても、砂浜で生き延びることを目指したビーストは、自らの意思で歩行、方向転換、危険察知などの自律行動ができる機能を備え、さまざまな環境に適応していくためのシステムを獲得しながら進化し続けています。
芸術と科学を横断する作品群は、ストランドビーストの起源と進化、今に生きる姿を紹介することで、現代を生きる私たちに自然の脅威から命を守るアイデアやメッセージを投げかけています。
Dutch artist Theo Jansen (1948–) began creating life forms called “Strandbeest” as one possible idea to address the rising sea level issues in his home country. These creatures are powered by the wind and inhabit the sandy beaches (strand), resembling living organisms (beest). They lift sand along the coastline and, while coexisting with nature, help protect the shorelines. As a warning about environmental issues, Jansen’s creative work has continued for over 30 years, predating the recent prominence of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
His early works were crafted by reusing materials such as discarded plastic tubes. The movements, designed based on physical engineering, are so smooth that they appear almost alive. Designed to survive on sandy beaches without human intervention, the Beests are equipped with autonomous functions such as walking, changing direction, and detecting danger. They continue to evolve, acquiring systems that allow them to adapt to various environments.
These works, which cross the boundaries of art and science, introduce the origins, evolution, and current existence of the Strandbeests. They convey ideas and messages to us, who live in the modern world, about protecting lives from the threats of nature.
