MEDEL GALLERY SHUでは、10月24日より11月５日まで、neineiの個展「わたしのID」を開催いたします。

2023年に多摩美術大学大学院美術研究科博士後期課程美術専攻を修了した、中国出身のneineiはポップな色彩とアイコニックなモチーフ、琳派を想起させる余白と動勢に富んだ画面構成、そして箔や黒の縁取りによって洗練された表現を確立する注目のアーティストです。
本展「わたしのID」では、長年にわたり取り組んできたテーマ「東京少女」を軸に、より内面的かつ自己照射的な視点から、自己と向き合う試みがなされています。
原宿を発信源とする「KAWAII」カルチャーは、単なるファッションの枠を超え、若者たちにとってオルタナティブな表現手段や、自己の居場所を築く文化的装置として機能してきました。近年では、世界各地の若者をつなぐ共通言語のようなフォーマットへと進化し、同時多発的に再解釈が生まれています。
本展においてneineiは、自己の内面におけるアイデンティティの揺らぎという極めて個人的な感覚や、分断された世界に対する感情にありのままに向き合うと同時に、グローバルに再編成される「KAWAII」の現在進行形の相貌との交差点を模索しながら、リアルで多層的な〈ID像〉を描き出そうとうとしています。
neineiによるこの試みが、皆様の視座に新たな問いや発見をもたらす機会となりましたら幸いです。ご高覧賜わりますようお願いいたします。

IDは、

存在の位相であり
欲動の軌跡であり
記号論的構造であり
物語的装置である。

だが、それは本質ではない。
差異と反復の運動のなかで、
肯定的に立ち上がる生成である。

わたしはその裂け目に揺らめく影。
ひとつではない、
増殖する影。

複数の影は、
互いに交差し、ほどけ、
揺らぎの中で、わたしは立ち上げる。
その反復こそが、
わたしのIDである。

本展は、「自己におけるIDとは何か」という問いから出発しました。
2015年に日本へ留学して以来、私は原宿を拠点にフィールドワークや文献調査を重ね、「東京少女」をテーマとする制作を続けています。
私の表現には常に、異文化の立場から日本文化を見つめる「外部の眼差し」があります。その視線は、平安時代の「引目鉤鼻」式人物描法をはじめ、狩野派·琳派·浮世絵といった美術史的系譜から、現代のカワイイカルチャーやマンガなどへと広がり、時間的·文化的な分脈を横断しながら展開しています。作品においては、幼さと蠱惑、静と動、可愛さと危うさといった相反する要素を同時に抱かせ、緊張と対比の両義性を意識的に追求しています。
これまでの制作過程では、どこか予定調和的な表現に寄りがちでした。本展では、社会や出来事を自らの眼差しで捉え、不安や不確かさを排除せず抱え込む姿勢で制作に取り組みました。また、長期にわたり「越境者」として外国に生きる中国人という立場を軸に、祖国と他国のあいだに漂うアイデンティティの揺らぎや曖昧さと向き合いました。その潜在的な層に触れることで、表現の感度を深め、より自由で伸びやかな表現を模索しています。
本展で提示するのは、現代社会におけるIDの多層的なイメージです。存在·欲動·記号·物語といった観点から「東京少女」を象徴化し、作品群として展開しました。デジタル社会に浮かび上がる「分身」としてのイメージを通して、単一で固定的な「わたし」ではなく、揺らぎ、重層化し、複数として共存する「わたし」の姿を示します。その不確かさの中にこそ、現代におけるIDの豊かさと生成的可能性が潜んでいると考えています。

MEDEL GALLERY SHU is pleased to present My ID, a solo exhibition by neinei, a rising artist from China who completed her PhD in Fine Arts at Tama Art University in 2023. Known for her pop-inflected colors, iconic motifs, dynamic compositions reminiscent of the Rinpa school, and refined use of gold leaf and bold black outlines, neinei has established a distinctive visual language that continues to draw attention.

In My ID, she develops her long-standing theme of the “Tokyo Girl,” turning inward to examine personal identity and self-reflection. Originating in Harajuku, “KAWAII” culture has evolved beyond fashion into an alternative form of expression and a cultural mechanism for young people to create their own spaces of belonging. Today it functions as a global language, continually reinterpreted across borders.

Within this context, neinei confronts the shifting nature of identity—its ambiguities, its fractures—while exploring the ever-changing, globally reconfigured face of “KAWAII.” Her work reveals a multilayered, living image of ID that resonates both personally and universally.

“My ID” began with a question: What is ID within the self?
Since coming to Japan in 2015, I have pursued the theme of the “Tokyo Girl,” combining fieldwork in Harajuku with art-historical research. My perspective is shaped by the “external gaze” of an intercultural outsider, moving fluidly from Heian-era hikime-kagibana portraiture to the Kano and Rinpa schools, ukiyo-e, contemporary kawaii culture, and manga.

My work deliberately embraces dualities—innocence and allure, stillness and motion, sweetness and unease—seeking tension and contrast. In this exhibition, I have moved away from predictable harmony, choosing instead to hold uncertainty close and to view society and events through my own eyes.

Living long-term as a foreigner in Japan, I also confront the ambiguity of identity that drifts between homeland and adopted country. By touching these latent layers, I aim for freer, more expansive expression.

Through these works, I present a multifaceted image of ID in contemporary society—an image that floats like a digital double, not fixed or singular but fluctuating, layered, and plural. Within this very uncertainty lies the richness and generative potential of identity today.
