Sculpture for Maintaining an Inclination is composed of acrylic, iron, wood, thread, mortar, and a gear. Crevasse is a ceramic work extending 100 centimetres across the floor. Its low position draws the viewer’s gaze downward. The title means “a fissure,” yet the work does not reproduce an actual landscape. Its surface and outline evoke sensations of ground, boundary, and distance within the viewer’s perception. Before and after learning the material; before and after reading the title—the object remains unchanged, yet the way we perceive its form and scale begins to shift. Chaen’s attention is directed not only toward the object itself, but toward the continuous movement of perception between object and background, form and meaning, detail and totality. Its title does not provide a fixed answer. As perception moves between the title and the physical form, the work may evoke water, passage, suspension, or an imagined landscape beyond the object itself. In Chaen’s work, meaning is not determined in advance. It is continually reorganised as the viewer moves between interior and exterior, object and floor, sculpture and surrounding space.
