MEDEL GALLERY SHU HIBIYAでは、11月13日より24日まで、佐藤宏美の個展「アナンシの舟」を開催いたします。
佐藤宏美は、茨城県笠間市を拠点に活動する「編む美術作家（彫刻家）」です。
海で自ら採取した流木に綿糸を緻密に編み合わせる独自の技法を確立し、自然物と工芸を融合させた唯一無二の立体作品を生み出しています。「編むという行為の原点は祈り」という信念のもと、静謐で生命力あふれる造形を追求。素材の持つ記憶と手仕事の痕跡が、見る者の心に深く語りかける「祈りのかたち」を表現し続けています
私は、何かをあらかじめ決めてから作品をつくらないのです。
素材や形、傷や影、偶然に生まれた痕跡。
そこに現れたものを手がかりに、私はsenseする。
流木や貝、編んだ糸の小さなパーツ。
銅版に刻まれた傷や、そこに落ちる影。
ひとつの手がかりが、次の場所へと私を導いてくれます。

自分ひとりではまだ知らない形を探しに、私は編み始める。
形を見つけるたびに、世界は少しだけ違って見えてくる。
「アナンシ」とは、手がかりを辿りながら物語を獲得していく、
西アフリカの神話の主人公です。
私の拾い集めた欠片も、やがて形になり、
形は新しいsenseを呼び起こし、
いつしかひとつの物語になっていく・・・
神話は、遠い昔に語られたものではなく、
日々の暮らしの中にも、手の中にも、
まだ名のない世界が静かに息づいています。
作品は、そこへ出かけていくための地図。
境界にひらかれた、ひとつの入口。
そこから先に何があるのか、
また今日も、手がかりを辿りながら、次の世界へ入っていきます。

MEDEL GALLERY SHU HIBIYA is pleased to present “Anansi’s Boat,” a solo exhibition by Hiromi Sato, from November 13 through November 24.
Hiromi Sato is a “knitting artist (sculptor)” based in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture.
She has developed a unique technique of meticulously weaving cotton thread around driftwood that she personally collects from the sea, creating one-of-a-kind sculptural works that bring together natural materials and craft. Guided by her belief that “the origin of the act of weaving is prayer,” Sato pursues forms that are both serene and filled with vitality. Through her work, she continues to express “forms of prayer,” in which the memories held within the materials and the traces of the artist’s hand speak deeply to the viewer.
I do not begin by deciding in advance what I am going to create.
The materials and forms, wounds and shadows, traces born by chance.
I sense through what appears before me, using it as a clue.
Driftwood and shells, small pieces of woven thread.
Marks engraved into copper plates, and the shadows that fall upon them.
One clue leads me to the next place.
I enter it.
I begin to weave in search of forms that I do not yet know on my own.
Each time I discover a form, the world comes to look just slightly different.
“Anansi” is the protagonist of a West African myth,
who acquires his stories by following one clue after another.
The fragments I have gathered eventually take shape.
Those forms awaken new senses,
and before I know it, they become a story…
Myths are not merely stories told in the distant past.
Even in our everyday lives, and within our own hands,
worlds that have yet to be named are quietly breathing.
My works are maps for venturing there.
An entrance opened onto a boundary.
What lies beyond it?
Once again today, following the clues,
I enter the next world.
And now, You enter it.

かぎ針編みを出発点に、素材に触れながら形を探る制作を続けている。
流木や貝殻などの身近なものを手がかりに、
そこに現れる形や痕跡からイメージを広げ、
東西を問わず神話にその形の糸口を求めながら、独自の世界を立ち上げている。
近年は、編むという行為にとどまらず、手にした素材や
出会ったものから立ち上がるイメージを「かたちのエネルギー」として捉え、
美術表現へと展開している。
その探究は綿糸による立体表現に限らず、銅版画にも及び、
異なる技法を通しても同じ根源的な感覚が通底していることを見出している。
Profile | プロフィール
1971 年 愛知県生まれ、茨城県在住。
1990 年 名古屋造形芸術短期大学 総合芸術学科卒業。
在学中より映像や立体など複数の表現を試みる。
幼い頃から手先を使うことに親しみがあり、
素材に触れながら形を生み出す感覚を、自然な表現手段として捉えていた。
卒業後も手法を変えながら制作を続けるが、
表現と自身の感覚との乖離から一度制作を離れる。
その間、生活の中で手を動かし続けながら、
神話や人の根源的な感覚への探究を深めていく。
結婚や子育てを経て、
「編むこと」を手法として2013 年より美術作家としての活動を再開。
素材や反復、時間の蓄積そのものへの関心が深まり、
神話を主題として試行と個展を重ねる中で、
素材を活かした形や、生成と変化のプロセスへと関心を深めている。
