MEDEL GALLERY SHU HIBIYAでは、9月4日より15日まで河原茉美の個展「画のある部屋
」を開催いたします。
河原は2025年に東京造形大学絵画専攻を卒業した新進のペインターで、独特な線描と着彩、切り絵や版画のような画面構成が特徴的です。
今回の展示作品の多くは、映画のワンシーンを浮世絵に見られる室内空間の屏風や障子へ描き込む画中画の構造を用いている。
着想の一つとなったのは、鈴木春信をはじめとする浮世絵に描かれた室内空間である。そこでは室内は人物を引き立てる背景として構成されることが多いが、本作では人物と室内空間を同等の存在として捉え直し、その内部にもう一つの作品世界を配置することで、主題と背景の関係を反転させた。
画面の中には、映画、浮世絵、室内空間、現実の展示空間という複数のレイヤーが重なり合う。視線は人物、室内、画中画へと往復し、一つの画面の中で複数の視点や時間、異なる作品世界を横断する。画中画という入れ子構造を通して、背景として見過ごされてきた空間や作品同士の関係性を可視化し、「見る」という行為そのものを問い直してみたい。

MEDEL GALLERY SHU HIBUYA presents Mami Kawahara’s third solo exhibition, A Room with Paintings, from September 4 to 15, 2026.
Kawahara is an emerging painter who graduated from the Painting Department of Tokyo Zokei University in 2025. Her work is characterized by distinctive linework and coloring, combined with compositions reminiscent of cut-paper art and printmaking.
In this exhibition, many of Kawahara’s paintings incorporate scenes from films into interior spaces inspired by the folding screens and shoji found in ukiyo-e. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Suzuki Harunobu, she reconsiders the traditional relationship between figures and their surroundings, treating the interior space as an equal presence rather than simply a background.
Multiple layers—including film, ukiyo-e, interior space, and the actual exhibition space—overlap within a single composition. Through this nested structure, Kawahara invites viewers to move between different perspectives, moments, and imagined worlds, while reconsidering the act of looking itself.
This marks Kawahara’s third solo exhibition at MEDEL GALLERY SHU. We look forward to seeing how her artistic practice continues to develop and evolve.
